Criminal Minds: Evolution: Did Rossi’s wife die?

The cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution features many of the same faces that the original Criminal Minds series had. One of these is the face of David Rossi. Unfortunately, Krystall Richards, who David Rossi married in season 15 of Criminal Minds, died before Criminal Minds: Evolution even started and thus, she will not be returning to the show.

About the cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution

When it was announced that the Criminal Minds revival series, Criminal Minds: Evolution, would be airing on Paramount+ in November 2022, many fans of the original series were cautiously optimistic about the future of the show. Fortunately, fans found solace in the fact that many members of the original Criminal Minds cast would be reprising their roles in the reboot.

This includes the likes of Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss), Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis), A.J. Cook (Jennifer Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), and Adam Rodriguez (Luke Valdez).

This new series will also feature returning members of the original show’s executive production staff, like writers, Breen Frazier and Christopher Barbour, and director Glenn Kershaw.

Criminal Minds: Evolution: Did Rossi’s wife die?

One of the primary reasons why fans were so excited to see that some of their favourite characters would be returning to the screen for Criminal Minds: Evolution is because this means that the spin-off show will have the opportunity to delve deeper into some of the character arcs that were established in Criminal Minds.

This includes the on-and-off relationship that was established between David Rossi and his ex-wife, turned new-wife, Krystall Richards, who was portrayed by Gail O’Grady in the original Criminal Minds.

Fans of the show really got invested in this relationship after David and Krystall rekindled their romance in season 14 of the show, only to have it all hang in the balance when Krystall becomes the object of the serial killer, Lynch’s focus in season 15.

Fortunately, Krystall  survived Lynch’s attack in the original Criminal Minds series.

However, it is revealed in the very first “Just Getting Started” episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution that Krystall had died about a year before the beginning of the show due to a serious illness, and that she would not be one of the returning cast members in the new show.

It is also clear from this first episode that Krystall’s death has had a profound effect on David Rossi and will likely be an important part of his character arc in the future of the show.

How did Krystall Richards die?

Criminal Minds: Evolution starts in 2022, and about two years have passed in the story between the first episode of the reboot and the last episode of Criminal Minds season 15, which aired in 2020.

During the first two episodes of the reboot, it is evident that the COVID-19 pandemic, which largely took over the world after the original show ended, has also had a lingering effect on many characters in the show.

Although the show has not yet disclosed exactly how Krystall died, Penelope Garcia reveals that her death was caused by a serious illness and the show’s creators have hinted at the fact that although her death was not caused by the coronavirus, the pandemic may have delayed her treatment, which eventually resulted in her death.

How has Krystall’s death affected David Rossi?

The show’s creators have definitely used Krystall’s death as a way for viewers of the show, who have experienced great tragedies during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic since the original show ended, to relate to the grief that David Rossi is experiencing and dealing with when Criminal Minds: Evolution starts.

Long-time fans of the show will know what a complex journey David Rossi and Krystall’s relationship was and how David Rossi has struggled with relationships in the past.

This is likely why he seemingly throws himself into his work with the BAU again in the first episode of the reboot and acts out towards other members of the team.

It is clear that David Rossi is still grieving for Krystall in the first few episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Which other members of the original cast are not returning for the reboot?

Gail O’Grady is not the only cast member who has decided not to return for the Criminal Minds reboot.

Most notably, Matthew Gray Gubler, who played the genius Dr. Spencer Reid, and Daniel Henney, who played Matt Simmons in the original Criminal Minds, will also not return to reprise their roles on the new show.
